We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in the Voulhire series by Matthew Tysz. It follows some of the characters in the first book together with several new characters. This book focuses on Virko, Voulhire’s most productive city, which was built on trade and the ideals of capitalism. Virko’s founder, Lord Venden Hrelek, is sick and dying. He wishes to end noble sovereignty and replace it with merchant rule, even though this means leaving his son a leader in name only with no real power over the city. Virko knows neither science nor religion. The Eiodi is more than happy to reinstate religion into the city when he identifies an opportunity to do so.

Galen Bray, who was introduced in the first book, is still working his uncle’s iron forge. When it turns out that no iron will be coming from the destroyed city of Hillport, he sets out for Virko with his companions, Rowan and Demetrius, to explore options of getting some iron. With the help of Demetrius’ school friend Lord Kayden, they get to meet Lord Venden. In the meantime, Lord Meldorath watches the kingdom from the shadows and bids his time, waiting for his opportunity to take his power back.

I found this book more interesting than the first book, possibly because I was familiar with many of the characters. Due to this, I did not have to spend a lot of time trying to figure out who they were or how they fit in. The characters are well developed and believable. The book is easy to follow, and each of the characters plays a vital role in taking the story forward.

There is more magic on display in this book than there was in the first one and I gained a more thorough understanding of the forces at work in the kingdom. What I liked most about the book was how the author managed to bring the story lines of diverse characters together. He was able to unite them and bring us to a believable ending, while still managing to add a twist to the story. Of course there were some loose ends, as is expected in a series, and I look forward to reading the next book to see how it turns out.

What I disliked most about the story was the rape scene at the beginning. In my view, this did not do much to develop the story and felt unnecessarily brutal. The book is well edited, and I rate it 4 out of 4. I recommend it to young adults who love fantasy. It is unsuitable for children due to the dark scenes and use of strong language in some sections.
