The Iron Fey Series

Post by rei_sawakami »

(This isn't a review, people.)

So I was reading the Iron Fey series, and, needless to say, I was rather hooked.

But that's not my point.

I was thinking it rather interesting to put a classic character in a new story, new world, new personality. And by this I mean Puck. But what are your opinions? Do you think it's better to create new characters altogether, or is it more fun to read a different perspective on a character we all know?

Oooo. I really like the questions you asked. I think Kagawa had the best of both worlds by creating new characters and giving a different perspective to Puck. As a non-author myself, I guess it would depend on how dynamic your characters are. If they're flat, maybe it's best to build off of an already-existing character. Or if you're looking to target a specific audience, using an already-existing character would help draw in the reader. Personally, I think it's a lot of fun reading about characters we know but from a different perspective. I haven't found many books that do that successfully, though.

I actually disliked The Iron King, the first book in the series. Meghan really bothered me, and Puck's character wasn't enough to make me keep reading. Meghan was just too helpless for my taste, to the point that she was just annoying. I hear that she gains more agency as the series goes on, but it just wasn't for me. Admittedly, Puck was the best part.
