We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in the fantastic series: We are Voulhire by Matthew Tysz. So make sure to read the first part before picking this one. Trust me; It's worth it.

Once again, we venture into Voulhire along with Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius. They have the mission of getting iron from the city of Virko. Easier said than done. Virko is an industrial city; consumed by greed, egoist, lacking faith. It is also home of Lord Folcro, a young man with questionable morals at best. And Lord Kayden, probably the loneliest man in all Voulhire. The perfect scenario for the chaos to come. The danger grows hidden in both plain sight and the darkness, threatening the prideful country.

Galen's plotline is still my favorite; Rowan and Demetrius make an explosive duo, only improved by Galen's attempts to keep them under control. They also happen to be the only happy thing in this book. Because let me tell you, Virko has dark skies. The themes inside the book are more adult than the ones in the first part; language, gore, and sexual implications are worth considering before picking it up.

We have new characters sharing the spotlight. These new voices fit perfectly into the darker tones and show us friendship, betrayal, and humanity (or the lack of it). They carry some of the most relevant plot points, showing us what we need to know as the story gets closer to the center of this web Tysz created. This change of narrators throughout the story is one of my favorite aspects; It could get messy or even confusing, but the author manages to write the shifts flawlessly. There was no moment when I felt confused about the place we were standing.

That said, I did notice there were not many female characters, and none of them were especially relevant in the plot. They served more as objects of desire or as people to kill in a gruesome scene, for some reason. And Tysz left out some interesting characters from the previous book I would've liked to read.

All and all, this book deserves a good 4 out of 4 stars. There were only a couple of grammar mistakes, nothing too serious. And the story is way too good. It would be a shame to take a star from a great book. As said before, it does have profanity and adult topics, so it's not suitable for sensitive audiences. It is perfect for anyone who enjoys fantasy stories and doesn't mind dark themes.
