Review by Tavaiel26 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
Following immediately after the previous book, In The Fires of Virko, we get to follow Galen and his new friends, Rowan and Demetrius as they unexpectedly walk straight into the overboiling conflicts of the city of Virko. In the open, Lord Venden, the accomplished master of this industrious town, has decided to develop the city towards a capitalist system but in the underbelly of the city behind closed doors and secret entrances, unrest has been brewing for some time.
The high-ranking nobles who stand to lose power with the modern reform and the upcoming economic system have very different ideas and some of them will stop at nothing to see Venden´s plan fail. Sinister forces are called into play, and Demetrius as the sole qualified member of the church in this secular town, gets thrown directly into the fight.
Hours away, in Yamon Soul, the head of the church learns disturbing information about the previous attack that occurred in Hillport and the magic wielded by Meldorath. Meldorath´s influence and power is starting to reach far into the continent while the capital seems unaware.
WE ARE VOULHIRE, The fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is a great second installment to the We are Voulhire series. The switch between storylines is still masterfully done, and the rhythm of the storytelling accelerates dramatically. Tysz is a master worldbuilder and dutifully gives the readers a fully fleshed universe to immerse themselves in. This complex series includes a unique magic system, different views of spirituality and how magic, religion and the material world relate to each other.
Sadly, it seems like in this installment we lose track of the female characters that were introduced in the previous book. I personally hope this is purely due to the fast rhythm of this series and that we will get interesting female characters back soon. This book also seems to need a bit more editing, both for grammar and for clarity mostly on the first chapters.
I gladly give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The previously mentioned issues do not take away from the amazing storytelling and worldbuilding. Similar to the first book in the series, this book is not appropriate for young readers as it includes some inappropriate language and mentions of strong violence and sexual assault. . I earnestly recommend this brilliant book to fans of this successful series and high fantasy in general.
