Review by cydnas -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under...
The first book of a series, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz, is a short but captivating read. In this book, we learn about a refugee inheriting property from his great uncle as well as the complicated lives of the king, knights, wizards, rebels, and others in the glorious, fictional world that is called Voulhire. Filled with themes of power, cultures, and magic, this book is sure to immerse you in a wondrous world.
I have to admit it was on the shorter side and introduced many characters, switching between perspectives ever so often. These components made becoming attached to some of the characters and having a deeper analysis of them harder to do. Fortunately, I did grow quite fond of certain characters, such as the protagonist Galen, remembering his moments vividly. His mindset contrasted with his new environment dramatically and was refreshing amidst the rest of the characters. I hope to see more of him in the following books of the series.
The book, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, has a style that is suitable for its genre. It is simply wonderful for a novel in general. It’s exceptionally edited with little to no errors. It has a flow that made reading this book a real pleasure. Its imagery, its character and plot developments, and its pacing were all exemplary.
Overall, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book is exactly my cup of tea despite the fact I find that sci-fi and fantasy books can be hit-or-miss. Thankfully, it was a hit. In Tysz’s book, I found myself reading with a great amount of excitement and interest. His writing takes you on a thrilling adventure, brings you to a world with somewhat unconventional characters, and explores intriguing ideas.
I would recommend this book to older audiences, to most teens and adults. It has a decent amount of profanity and no cases of extreme sexual scenes. The characters, the style, and the plot could certainly be appreciated by many people, especially sci-fi and fantasy fans. In the hopes that others do decide to read this book, I encourage them to use the resources Tysz has provided. He has provided a reference guide and a website with information about the rich and powerful Voulhire. Utilizing it before and throughout the story will provide a deeper understanding of the history and background of Voulhire.
