Review by Lioncourt -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival un...
In the thriving nation of Voulhire, king Wilhelm Arcolo appoints one of his favored judges to be the lord of one of the southernmost territories of the nation. To the public, this appointment is to bring Hillport into the golden age. To the king and judge Eldus Alderman, the appointment is nothing but a rouse to smother some rumors and ensure that a very dangerous prisoner remains captive.
At the same time, Galen immigrates from his war-ravaged homeland to Voulhire after his great uncle secures his citizenship in Voulhire. After the long and relatively exciting journey from his home, the Land of the Princes, he falls into the company of Rowan, the executor of the will of his now-dead great uncle. Galen begins his new life in Voulhire and starts learning the trade of his now-dead great uncle with the guidance of Rowan. The two go on various adventures where they meet various people and uncover the occasional secret not meant for their minds.
With the threat of rebel invasion of Voulhire and the relentless ambitions of a prisoner, will Galen have the peaceful future he dreamt of having in Voulhire or is he destined to live in yet another war-torn nation? Well, that is for me to know and for you to find out when you read We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz.
The book is mainly written in the third person perspective with the exception Galen's perspective. This blend in the narrative was initially something I was unsure about but as I progressed in the book I found it to be really nice. In a way, it helped me keep track of the myriad of characters.
One thing that I particularly did not like was the fact that there was no true central theme in this book. I guess this is to be expected as this book is just the first in a series of books. Also, the ending was relatively annoying because of the major cliffhangers but as there is a sequel to it, I do not particularly mind.
Mr.Tysz builds a truly vivid world in this book with imagery so stunning that I wanted to visit Voulhire after I was done with the book. The blend of medieval and modern features was quite brilliant as they complemented each other. The vividness of the book was not limited to the world built in this book as it contained a degree of vulgarity. There was no cause for alarm about the diction of this book as it is very well damn near perfect.
For the reasons above, I rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies 4 out 4 stars. It is an amazing fantasy novel that does not shy away from older readers and I'd be glad to recommend this book to all fantasy readers. I can not wait to read the next book.
