We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz.

We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is an epic fantasy novel by author Matthew Tysz. It is the second book in the We are Voulhire series. The story takes place in Voulhire's main source of industry, the city of Virko.

The story continues a few weeks after the previous book's events, with the main protagonist, Galen Bray. Galen and his friends, Rowan and Demetrius, are tasked with a mission that sends them on an adventure to the city of Virko. Arriving in the city, the group is sent to the home of the current lord of Virko, Venden Hrelek. Upon meeting the lord, the gang is informed of a dark and mysterious entity lurking in the undercroft of the house. What will they find? And what other secrets will be uncovered in the city of Virko?

Matthew Tysz has done an amazing job of transitioning the plot of the first book into this one. It was smooth and there was no huge time skip between the two books. Similar to the first book, descriptive imagery was well executed. It was easy to visualize the places that are mentioned. The characters were easy to tell apart from each other, they all had distinct personalities. The story is told in third-person for all the characters except Galen's, his were told in the first-person narrative.

There was nothing in the book that I disliked. I loved the variety of characters and their personalities, relating to some and disliking others was an easy task. I thought the character development was very noticeable, especially for Galen. It was good to see him losing some of the naivety he had in the first book. I did not pick up on any grammatical or spelling errors throughout the book. The editing was done exceptionally well.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. There is a fair amount of profanity and violence throughout the story. There are also mentions of rape at certain points but nothing graphic. Therefore I do not recommend it to anyone younger than 16 or those who are easily triggered by these topics. Religion plays a big role in the story; however, it is more of a fictitious religion so people of all religious backgrounds can enjoy the book. I would recommend this book to young adults who enjoy fantasy stories.

I also enjoyed this book, but I feel like nothing happened. I mean, events don't seem to affect the bigger picture, won't you agree?
