[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Demon Heart 3 Year of the Witch" by David Crane.]
Demon hybrids, ancient samaris, dark magic, and self-sacrifice abound in the final installment to the Demon Hearts trilogy. Demon Hearts 3 Year of the Witch written by David Crane is a fast paced, action-packed novel about demon agent Naoko Kitammura and her quest to use her extraordinary powers to protect Japan by fighting supernatural enemies.
Although Naoko tries to keep out of trouble through her young life, due to her knowledge of her bloodlines as the descendant of a pure female demon and a 16th-century samurai; a horrific assault awakens her demonic powers leaving her with the ability and desire to protect her home country of Japan. With guidance and wisdom from the spirit of her mother, Naoko is prepared to battle both natural and supernatural enemies. After being offered a job that she can’t refuse to battle the supernatural and save many innocent lives, which leads her to sacrifice herself resulting in her death, rebirth, and ability to reinvent herself to build her own family. As she enters the New Year, a time period known as the Year of the Witch evolves and abounds with mystical beings and dark magic trying to drown out the forces of good.
Although this novel isn’t a stand-alone novel, I believe it can be read as one. There is plenty of descriptive backstory for Naoko and has a well-placed summary for the first two books. The action is intense while the dialogue is witty and a bit edgy. I loved the different settings as we traveled through Siberia and Japan, and felt as if I were traveling all over our world and the other world with Naoko. This book is incredibly well written and has the feel of a professionally edited book. The supernatural evil was easy to hate, and I fell in love with Naoko and her family all over again.
While this is an incredibly fun book to read, I don’t recommend it for everyone. There is a bit of explicit language, some very descriptively graphic violence, and a few sexual situations that would definitely make it more appropriate for older audiences and those that don’t mind a bit of grit and edginess to their reading. That being said, it will definitely keep you both hooked and on the edge of your seat wanting more.
With action-packed, heartstopping adventure, I wholeheartedly give Demon Hearts 3 Year of the Witch 4 out of 4 stars. I feel most urban fantasy readers will enjoy this novel and feel as if it were the perfect ending to the series.
