Review by kaitlynrobbins -- Homecoming by Jude Austin
The battered projects Kata and Tau manage to escape from GenTech where the handlers were torturing and experimenting on them. The destination was Kata’s home planet of Trandellia to find refuge. Tau has never been outside of GenTech and is experiencing so many new things whilst trying to remain calm and collected to get as far away from the lab as possible. They get through some pesky situations and locate a small motel where the manager doesn’t ask too many questions. The two projects get to their room to recover from their injuries. Tau tries to rest at the motel while Kata ventures out to find food and supplies at a nearby convenience store.
On the way back from the store Kata is discovered, brought to an unknown site by two men who bring him to the leader of The Diamonds, an organized crime syndicate in Trandellia. While he is there, he is tortured and forced to commit inconceivable acts. After being broken down he finally agrees to the terms of working for them to eventually be free.
The projects make their way closer to Trandellia once Kata returns to the motel to collect Tau. They start their trip back to Kata’s home planet and go through a checkpoint; they are picked up by different guards and taken to another organization known as Core Central, another group that wants to use the projects’ skills for their benefit.
They agree to help Core Central with its mission with the understanding they will be free once it is complete. While they are traveling to the planet Tau finds himself kidnapped by a bounty hunter and taken back to GenTech. Kata makes it his new mission to intercept Tau and rescue him before he reaches the lab. He ends up injured and in the hospital but meets people he thinks can help him in getting Tau back and eventually being free. Maybe this time he can let down his walls and allow someone to help him get through this terrible time in his life.
I am giving Homecoming (Projects: Book 2) by Jude Austin a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. The book is well written, and I only found one instance of a typo in the entire book. I found the work exceptionally well-edited.
I liked how the author went into the background of the characters to show how they became who they are. I also liked the description of Tau maneuvering through the real world and showing how he was nervous about all the different colors and objects he has never seen or used before. There wasn’t anything that I disliked most; I found the reading flawless overall.
I would recommend reading the first book in the Projects series before reading Homecoming (Projects: Book 2) This series is great for sci-fi fans as it is based in the future and takes place on other planets. I would recommend it to young adult readers or older as there are many instances of cursing throughout the book.
