Review by Victoria Baadom -- We are Voulhire: The Fires ...
Galen, Demetrius, and Rowan set out on a journey to the industrial town of Virko to purchase iron for Magnum Caelum. On getting there, they are promised an iron reserve by the dying Lord of Virko on the condition that they keep an eye out for his son Hans and help banish the demon that lives beneath his home. They agreed, but little did they know that they were taking on more than they bargained for.
As the determined friends go about their business, Virko is undergoing a change in the system of government and state on the order of the dying Lord Venden. Good as his intention for his people and Virko are, his son Hans (also known as Folcro) and members of his little circle have plans of their own towards Virko. Plans that circumstance left up to our three heroes to stop. Will Galen and his friends be able to halt those plans that may spell the doom of the beloved Virko?
We Are Voulhire: Fires of Virko is the second book in the We Are Voulhire series. The previous book We Are Voulhire: A New Beginning Under Great Skies saw the arrival of Galen Bray to Magnum Caelum, a small city in the beautiful country of Voulhire. The events at the beginning of Fires of Virko happen one week after his arrival.
The first thing that I fell in love with is the fact that the author introduced in the book. These characters are; new characters like Lord Kayden, Lord Dragan, Peter, and Sod. They each came with their backstories, sense of humor, and ideologies that helped spice up the novel and made it such an interesting read.
Another thing I appreciate is the fact that the author writes about the history of Virko and tells his readers the reason behind its success. Some of these questions that I had after reading the first book in the series are, “How did Virko become the most prosperous city in Voulhire? Why is it that they are called the most advanced? Does it mean that no other city does the things they do (things like inventing modern-day equipment such as a steamer)?” Those questions are all answered in this book.
My favorite thing about the book is Demetrius’ and Rowan’s love-hate relationship. I cannot tell you how many times their conversations got me howling with laughter. An example of such is where Demetrius said, "I have the flint striker! What do you have, aside from that gaping hole in your face?" when Rowan was making fun of him for being unable to light a torch with a spell (since he knew magic). Sometimes I fear for Rowan’s life where Demetrius is concerned, but I cannot deny that I love them together.
The only thing I dislike about the book is the typographical errors that I saw in it. Although this is the case, I believe that it was edited professionally. Why? Because the errors seen by me were not up to 10. The few errors also did not make reading comprehending the paragraphs on which they were seen difficult.
In conclusion, I give We Are Voulhire: Fires of Virko written by Matthew Tysz a 4 out of 4 stars rating for the professional editing, the beautiful storyline, and the top-notch character development. I recommend the book and its series to lovers of fantasy and magic over the 13 years (because the author used a lot of profanities in it). I am sure that you will love this.
