“Fantasy literature is the one true literature of hope and imagination.” ~ Vera Nazarian

In his book We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, Matthew Tysz introduces his readers to a powerful land, Voulhire, where the natural and supernormal worlds co-exist. Voulhire is a land worth knowing. A country where every little township that makes it up, contributes to something unique. A place where people live their lives dreaming and achieving their dreams. Although the country is heading towards a golden age, the citizenry is seen struggling for an identity when belief, technology, and the supernatural offer opportunities for growth, but each with their own underlying motives.

The story centers on Galen Bray, a refugee who has escaped his war-torn homeland and immigrated to Magnum Caelum, a tiny town in Voulhire, to receive an inheritance from his estranged Uncle. Once there, he is not only mesmerized by the people and life in the fascinating world he’s put into but also learns more about himself and life in general. He is no extraordinary hero - but a believable character with emotions and thoughts that you and I would have on any given day. Join him as he takes an enthralling journey to give back and do something for his new-found home.

Beginning with gratitude and hope and later building up into a suspense saga, this is a story that is entertaining, gripping, and enigmatic all at once! The plot is character-driven and puts on display an array of distinct, strong, and magical personas that leave the readers spell-bound. The book is a fresh blend of fantasy, mystery, and medieval-time political drama.

There is a measure of mystic and enchantment within the pages of this exceptionally well-edited book. I was fascinated by how effortlessly the story unraveled. I’m not a fan of multiple points of view but the author’s style of writing did it for me. He managed to keep a hassle-free track of the characters and their individual stories and motives. The language is free-flowing and the chapters are kept short which makes the book all the more appealing. The plot is not foreseeable and leaves the reader hanging on every word. I’d rate the book a 4 out of 4.

I liked the inclusion of a map at the start. It was helpful to have the layout and a picture of where everything was located. I loved the thorough build-up for the antagonist and how he is introduced in the last quarter of the story. Reading his perspective leaves you questioning your initial opinion on the character and creates an excitement for the upcoming parts of the series in the reader’s mind. I fell in love with the book (in John Green’s words, “slowly and then all at once”)!

I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a temporary escape from everyday life and indulge in a world of make-believe.
