Although this is the second book in Jude Austin’s Projects series, it doesn’t feel like a second book. I say that as a compliment to the author and not as a slam on the book. The author did a great job of writing this book in such a way that I wouldn’t feel like I was missing out on anything if I hadn’t read the first book. Likewise, she didn’t spend too much time talking about what happened in the first book either. It was one of the things that I liked about the book from the beginning.

Homecoming picks up with Kata and Tau trying to find their way after they escape from GenTech. Kata’s plan is to go to his home planet, Trandellia, find a safe place, and then figure things out from there. He quickly finds that the journey isn’t going to be that easy. There are a lot of people that he encounters, who want to use him for his abilities. Add that to the fact that he’s having to constantly describe this whole new world to Project Tau, who has never been outside of the lab, and it makes for rough time.

When I sat down to read this book, I read it in two sittings. The storyline was so well written that I found myself wanting to know what happened next, and wanting to see how it all turned out. The characters were well developed, and the pace of the book flowed along nicely. Some books like this tend to skip over character development in favor of fast-paced action, so I appreciate that Austin chose not to do that.

Really, the only thing I didn’t like about the book was that it wasn’t long enough. I’m looking forward to reading the third book in this series. However, one of the things that I think will turn some people off from reading this book, the language, is the one thing that I could say I didn’t love. There’s not a lot of language in it, and it seems well placed, but I could have also done without it. The other thing that needs to be mentioned is the aspect of sexual abuse that is in the book. This is not a major theme of Homecoming, but it does play a role in things. Its inclusion may be a trigger, or a negative for some.

Anyone who enjoys science fiction type books, or even just books with a good story, will enjoy this book. I’m not a die-hard fan of science fiction, and I really enjoyed it. The only real errors that I saw in the book were due more to the formatting across digital platforms; at least that’s my thought. There were some spacing issues on a few of the pages. Other than that, it was very well edited. I rate this book 4 out of 4. I would definitely recommend that anyone who isn’t offended by the two aforementioned issues read this book. It was well worth the two evenings that I spent reading it.
