Awakening by Tayma Tameem is about Princess Amara, the second child of the rulers of Hale – King Frenar and Queen Esther. The book opens up to a scene 26 years ago where King Frenar is telling his 4-year-old daughter, Princess Katja, the story of the spirits that control the four seasons. On that night, Princess Amara is born, and with her comes Brikkir, the spirit of winter. This means that she will have the power to summon and control ice. Despite this great gift, her father is faced with a conundrum. Should he allow Cortel, his mage, and friend to take her powers away (to afford her a normal life) or should he let her be and trust her to be responsible with her powers as she grows older? One thing is certain, no matter what decision her father takes, she is destined for greatness. Amara, under the loving care of her sister Katja and her parents, grows to be a beautiful young woman. However, an event will happen shortly after her 16th birthday, an event would occur that will change her life and her view of the world.

As the name says, the novel is about the awakening of Amara's powers and a show of the things that can be accomplished or destroyed if she so wishes. The author's style of writing is an interesting one. She deals with a particular reality in each chapter. Where one chapter talks about what happened in the past, the next is about what is happening in the present. This helps in developing the characters in the book - especially that of Princess Katja and Princess Amara - as the book progressed.

The major themes of the book are anger, self-control, friendship, and magic. Each chapter has a title and the events that happen in this chapter revolve around its title. The book is also devoid of typographical errors and this leads me to conclude that the book was professionally edited.

The friendship and sisterly love between the two sisters – Katja and Amara – is one that brought a big smile to my face. It is one that many people can only wish that they had with their sibling(s). The love these sisters have for each other is nothing short of beautiful. The love is so strong that Katja is willing to forego marriage just to be close to Amara. This is what I liked best about the book. This made me wonder what things would have been like had I adored my big sister and have her love me unconditionally when I was little.

There is nothing I hated about the book. The design on the cover page is beautiful, it was edited professionally, there was enough suspense to keep me reading, and as a diehard magical fiction fan, this book appealed to my every need. There is magic, a little bit of innocent romance, and a little fighting and blood spillage.

I give Awakening a 4 out of 4 stars rating for the attributes spelled out above. I recommend this book to fellow fantasy and magical fiction novels like myself. Although there are no dragons or unicorns in it, I am pretty sure that you will love this beautiful piece of literature.
