Review by SamaylaM -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival und...
Galen is a young man, engulfed by the misery of wars at his homeland, the Lands of Princes. His innocent mind and heart earn for better opportunities to live, and when the chance finally arrives due to his uncle’s death, he sets sail to the magnificent and terrifying kingdom of Voulhire. But alas, there is so much more to this empire than meets the eye!
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fast-paced fantasy novel with a gripping plot and unforgettable characters. The story starts with Lord Melodrath, an immensely powerful mage, taking over the city of Hillport by killing the reigning Lord, Orlin. Soon, however, Lord Melodrath disappears, and King Wilhelm of Voulhire declares him dead to the citizens. We then take a journey to several fascinating places with different religions and customs in Voulhire through Galen’s eyes. But there is more to discover as peculiar occurrences keep happening.
What I liked the most about this book was the author’s beautifully descriptive writing style. He constructed the sentences in a way that made the picture of the Voulhire realm, monuments, dresses, weapons, and nature very vivid in my mind. This way, the author was able to hold my attention throughout the book. My favorite character was Lord Eldus. He was the eccentric new Lord of Hillport, who came as a savior to the city after it suffered from both Lord Orlin and Lord Melodrath’s control. He was kind and cared a lot about the betterment of Hillport’s people. The book gradually comes together in the final chapters in an intense way but ends on a cliffhanger. The ending made me sentimental, but I cannot wait to read the next book of the series.
I cannot honestly mention anything that I disliked in this book. Although this story contained some mature content, I did not mind the incorporation of it. That is because those elements actually provided help in understanding a few characters. In terms of grammar mistakes and such, the book seemed professionally edited to me, and whatever errors I could find did not hamper my reading.
With all that said, I would gladly award We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz with 4 out of 4 stars. The book did the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre justice with its unique world-building and magical components. Due to having profanities and explicit violence, this book would not be suitable for younger audiences. More importantly, I would like to give a trigger warning since the book contains mentions of rape. Aside from that, people who are intrigued by a plot filled with magic, conflict, suspense, drama, and action will love this story. I would undoubtedly recommend this short and satisfying read to all Sci-Fi/Fantasy and C/T/M/H readers.
