We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second installment in the We are Voulhire series. The event in this book occurs a short period after the event in the last book.

The town of Magnum Caelum is in trouble, and needs iron urgently. Wanting to repay the mayor and the town of Magnum Caelum for their kindness, Galen volunteers to go with his friends to the town of Virko and ask for help. Upon arriving they learn that the Lord of Virko, Venden Hrelek, is ill and bedridden. He requests Galen and his friends remove the demon lurking in his castle to save his son, Hans Hrelek (Folcro), from darkness. Meanwhile, Meldorath is planning how to wreak havoc on the people of Voulhire in his quest for vengeance. Darkness lurks in every corner of Voulhire, most of all Virko. Will Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius save the prideful citizens of Virko before it is too late, or will they fail and doom everyone to the darkness threatening the city?

This book is written in multi-POV similar to the first book. I was better prepared for this, so it didn’t annoy me as much as my experience with book one. I didn’t appreciate Matthew Tysz's ability to write about various characters without losing focus on the plot in the previous book; I applaud him for that. Few authors get to accomplish that. The book is filled with violence and major plot-twist. I could not predict any event in the book, and I was shocked at the horrifying ending of some events. I enjoyed the experience.

In this book, we get to see more of Galen and his friends as they take major roles in the events unfolding in the story. All the characters were likable, even antagonists were interesting to read about. Everything is not as it seems in this story, most of the characters have a darker side to them. I enjoyed the banter between Galen and his friends, Rowan especially amused me. My favourite of the book was the background story of Folcro and Kaden. The dark theme surrounding their friendship was very intriguing, I kept looking forward to their POV. I cannot wait to read more about these two characters in future books. I have a feeling they will play a crucial role in the future of Voulhire.

For me, this book is worth a 4 out of 4 rating. The writing was outstanding; the book seemed professionally edited, for I have noticed no grammatical errors. Matthew Tysz is a wonderful writer; his creativity of Voulhire was remarkable. His description of the cities in the book were wonderfully written and easy to picture. As amazing as the book was, I still had a few issues with it. I didn’t like the cliffhanger at the end of the book; I’m noticing a pattern in the lack of closure in each book series. There are many questions from the first book that I was hoping would be answered in this book, but I was a little disappointed when the events in the previous book were barely mentioned. Only some main characters from the first book appeared in this second installment, otherwise, the book had new characters.

I didn’t like the lack of explanation in some characters' actions, it made understanding the plot a little difficult. There was a noticeable absence of major female characters in this book; the few female characters written in the book were only used as victims and died quickly after making an appearance.

I recommend anyone that would like to read this book to start with the first installment We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great skies for the introduction of the series. This book contains profanity and adult content, it is not appropriate for anyone under the age of eighteen. People that enjoy fast-pacing, action-packing thrilling fantasy will enjoy this book.

This complex medieval world with crime-filled adventure was an absolute pleasure to read, I look forward to reading the next book of the series.

Although I’m not a fan of fantasy novel, this seems like an interesting read.
