[Following is a volunteer review of "We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies" by Matthew Tysz.]

[rwc=id373763-125]4 out of 4 stars.[/rwc]We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first in the We are Voulhire series from Matthew Tysz, and Tysz does the perfect job of making you want to read on in this series. Following the early journey of Galen Bray, a refugee from the war-torn Lands of the Princes, this first novel sets the scene for the magic and action-filled adventure to come.

When Galen’s great uncle falls ill, he hires an executor to track down his great-nephew and bring him to the land of Voulhire to take over his forge. For Galen, this is the sanctuary he has been seeking, as he arrives at Magnum Caelum to follow in his great uncle’s footsteps in becoming a blacksmith. Galen’s journey to his new life introduces him to new friends and sees his path cross with new foes he has yet to meet.

Throughout Voulhire, threats lurk in the darkness of its past. The Riva Rohavi, a band of troublemakers descendant from those who were against Voulhire’s new era, have gone quiet for what seems to be almost too long. Then there’s the far more recent history of the town of Hillport, stained by the reputation of its last two lords and their vile behavior whilst in power. From Lord Orlin, with his questionable engagements with his subjects, to Lord Meldorath and his obscure magic practices.

Lord Eldus, the new lord of Hillport, seeks to heal these scars on the town and its people. His core mission is to revive the spirit and economy of this humble town, entrusted to him by King Wilhelm himself. Hillport’s future, however, is not the only thing King Wilhelm entrusted to Lord Eldus. When secrets are kept and the rumor mills turn, old threats cannot remain in the past and will only grow in strength as they encroach on the future.

As someone who does not often turn to the fantasy genre by default, my mind might just have been changed by We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, as this is a fantasy series that I can get behind. I rate this book 4 out of 4 and simply cannot fault it.

I thoroughly enjoyed Tysz’s poetic writing style that blends modern flavor with everything you would expect from the tone of a fantasy novel. Each of his characters represents something greater than themselves, from the strength to overcome inherent in Galen Bray to the eternal optimism of light in the darkness that is Lord Eldus. His approach to the structure and plot of this novel allows you to get to know each character on a deeper level, making it easy to follow who is who.

Suspense, action, and twists less predictable than usual make this a page-turner that anyone can jump into whole-heartedly and they will not be disappointed. Even if fantasy is not your go-to genre, you will more than likely be pleasantly surprised and entertained by the magical land of Voulhire.
