Awakening, by Tayma Tameem, is no ordinary book. In a sea full of romance and epic love stories, this book is filled with the wonders of sisterly love. Katja, the princess of the Kingdom of Hale, realized her purpose in life the moment her sister was born. From the first time Katja laid her eyes on Amara, she knew then and there just how special she was. Amara was destined for greatness, for she was gifted powers that no one has seen for centuries. Katja knew then that she would do everything in her power to protect her sister. Years after, Katja found herself in a strange forest with no recollection of who she was, except for her name. Meanwhile, whispers of Amara’s reign of terror spread throughout the kingdom.

In terms of the author’s writing technique, I can honestly say that it was magical. The writing was very apt for the theme of the story. The author incorporated flashbacks throughout the book showing Amara’s journey and how she ended up as a cruel queen. The flashbacks were seamlessly done in a way that elements in both the present and the past connect with each other. I was impressed with how smooth the transitions between both times were.

The thing I liked most about this book is the love that Katja and Amara have for each other. Reading about their childhood and how they always had each other’s backs brought me to tears. Amara was a greatly misunderstood child. Everyone in the palace either hates her or fears her. Although their parents love her, they don’t always understand her. The only one who truly did was her sister, Katja. This book made me long to have a sister myself.

Even though the book is mainly focused on portraying sisterly love, it still had the element of romance in it. I would recommend this to readers who are looking for something magical to read. On the other hand, I would not recommend this to readers who prefer action-packed books. This book was beautiful, but nothing much happens in it. We follow Katja through her journey of self-discovery while learning about their past. As it is only the first book in the series, it’s only natural that its plot focuses more on introducing the characters and their stories.

I didn’t find anything to dislike in this book. I also did not find any errors while reading it. One of my criteria for giving perfect marks to a book is its ability to make me feel things. The portrayal of the love between Katja and Amara warmed my heart. It was perfectly done. For that, I’m giving this book 4 out of 4 stars. I can’t wait to read the next one.
