We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book of the We are Voulhire series. This book is for mature readers due to the gore and profanity. The tragic events of Hillport from the previous book is now history. The story moved on from that horrible night and the reader is focused more on another city. The city of Virko is known for its industry of coal and iron but this city will also be known for much more by the end of this book.

The reader is introduced to many new characters like Folcro. Who he is and what his mission will become clear. Will he live to carry on what his father accomplished or will he ruin it all? Another character, Lord Kayden, will play a pivotal role in the story as well. The reader will get to know the background of the lords of Virko and learn about their troubles. There is more than just the people living here, something else is lurking in the shadows. The reader will soon continue on the adventure of Galen Bray, Rowan and Demetrius. This trio will find themselves helping the Lord of Virko in order to help obtain what they need for the city of Magnum Caelum, iron. Little did they know they would encounter something much darker than they were prepared for and obtain something much greater like the Hollenblase! Now what is that? The reader will need to discover that on their own.

What I liked the most about We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko was learning more about Demetrius, the monk. Just how powerful is he? What does he know? It was exciting to see his character grow from being someone studying rocks to a protector of his friends! Another thing I liked about the second book was the relationship between Lord Kayden and young Lord Hans Hrelek. It was a different kind of relationship, the kind that can end up deadly due to fear, jealousy and abandonment.

If I had to find something to dislike in this book it would be too little of Lord Meldorath! We have this almighty mage and yet the reader does not see much action from him until later on when he meets with the Eiodi. He did a great deal in the previous book so I expected more events to occur or maybe go further into his background. Instead, the story was focused on the Lords of Virko, their background and their allies. This was not necessarily a bad thing, I am just left wanting more! I was glad to read about Lord Meldorath and his confrontation with the Eiodi. That was an interesting visit indeed!

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it was action packed from beginning to end. It was also exceptionally well edited. The story was filled with adventure, violence and magic. The momentum from the first book continued on! I look forward to seeing how Galen, Demetrius and Rowan might save Voulhire in the next book!
