Review by Barbara_Waweru -- We are Voulhire: A New Arriv...
Once upon a time, there lived a ruler of a powerful nation who had four sons. Suspecting betrayal from them, he removed them from his palace and gave each of them an island, off the mainland. They were happy for a short period, after which they started fighting. Each of them wanted to take control of the entire nation. Galen Bray was from the land of these princes. Majority of his life, all he had known was suffering. As he travelled on the swaying ship, he was filled with hope. He was going to Voulhire! Voulhire is a special kingdom filled with hope, prosperity, and positivity. It is easy to succeed there. However, like any other place, it has some challenges.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a captivating historical fiction. It is first among the series: We are Voulhire. The author tells a story about the kingdom of Voulhire, the major cities in it, the rulers, the people, and the surroundings. Galen Bray who is a significant character in the book experiences a whole new world once he goes to Magnum Caelum, one of the cities in Voulhire. Virko, Yamon Soul, Soulhire, Iseron, and Hillport are also other cities in Voulhire highlighted in the story. Lord Eldus, formerly a judge in Soulhire is appointed to be the new Lord of Hillport. He experiences a different world as he tries to lead this small town to the glory it deserves, just like the rest of the cities in Voulhire.
Magic, power, poverty, industrial development, and politics are some of the major themes in this book. The author shows how the magic world, Caromentis relates to the physical world, Cosmos. One major character, Lord Meldorath is very fascinating. Throughout the book, mystery surrounds him. It is hard to explain why he is feared so much. Is he a good or bad person?
The author is very skilled. He describes everything in detail, making it easy to picture the characters and places. He creates a fascinating world, Voulhire which keeps the reader engaged. There is nothing I disliked about the book. It seems professionally edited. Notwithstanding, what I liked most was the storyline.
I would recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction. Those who love books about kingdoms and empires would appreciate this masterpiece. I will gladly rate this book four out of four stars. I gave it a perfect score because of the remarkable storyline. It is, however, unsuitable for younger audiences as there is some use of profane language. I can’t wait to get hold of the next book in the series.
