We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book of the We are Voulhire saga by Matthew Tysz. In this second book, we get back to the universe we have encountered in the first one, where we met the main character, Galen Bray; a refugee who arrives at Voulhire with great enthusiasm and hope to start a new life. As the story develops, we get to know better this apparently thriving country and eventually realize it actually has deep flaws.

This second book starts right where the first ended, and the various storylines the first book had, start to converge in this second part. The story takes place at Virko, the most industrial city of Voulhire. Venden Hrelek arrived at a flat empty land and, during his lifetime, made it became the most productive city in Voulhire. Now he lies on his deathbed and new big changes are coming into the city, but what Lord Venden is most worried about, is his son, Hans Hrelek. He’s afraid Hans has contact with a demon bounded in his own house. Galen and his new friends arrive in Virko in search of iron for his forge but, the moment they arrive, they sense there is something wrong in the city and soon they get involved with the darkness that lies in wait upon Virko.

What I liked the most about the book was how the author keeps building this fantasy world filled with magic, spirituality, and science. It transports the reader to a different universe. Matthew Tysz beautifully weaves the different storylines throughout the pages in a way that the reader gets caught with the story from the beginning. One thing that I didn’t like was the lack of female characters. The women that appear in the story are mostly background characters.

I rate this book with 4 out of 4 stars. I truly enjoyed reading it. I easily connected and felt empathy for the characters. The plot is not predictable and it kept surprising me. I did not find grammar errors or typos, so I can say the edition is excellent.

The tone of the book gets a lot darker in comparison with the first book of the saga. It contains profane language, graphic violent scenes, sexual violence, and sexual jokes. I recommend this book for an adult audience who enjoys fantasy, action, adventure, and even politics. This book is the second of a saga so, if you haven’t read the first one, I recommend you to do it and enter into this new fantasy world.
