Review by Kyhm -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under G...
The first entry into the Voulhire series called We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a science fiction novel written by Matthew Tysz. The story took place in the kingdom of Voulhire, which has finally come into its Golden Age. However, a small town in the southern part has suffered a lot from its previous rulers. Overseeing the town's potential for growth, King Wilhelm appointed Lord Eldus as the new leader to restore peace. An honest and ambitious man he is, he set forth to the small town with the hopes of improving the overall situation and ridding the people of fear brought by one of its infamous leaders, Lord Meldorath. Meanwhile, Riva Rohavi is on the move again to get revenge and cause chaos within the kingdom.
The book is more of an introduction to each character's role in the story and some history within Voulhire. I specifically like the part wherein each character has a voice because I get to know bits of their personality and their point of view. It doesn't contain lots of action at first, but I find it necessary to understand a bit more of their backgrounds. I also enjoyed the exchanges of dialogue between Rowan and Galen. I find both of their personalities amusing, the former being a funny man and the latter being an innocent one. Although it's just the beginning, I can sense that this would be a fascinating story. I have this feeling that there's more to come for sure in the next books of the series.
I'm not sure if I dislike anything. If I have to mention something, maybe I dislike that it wasn't clear what time the story took place. At first, I was thinking of a more old fashioned setting, with castles, caravans, arrows, and swords going on there. But it's hilarious to find modern expressions at the same time, such as "Hi, dad."
I'm giving We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies 4 out of 4. It's an enthralling story that reminds me of the Harry Potter series. They don't have the same plot, but I feel like the Voulhire series has a lot more to offer as well. I can still remember how Meldorath's plan can make someone's blood run cold. Just like any other great books, it also gives a feeling of excitement towards what could happen next.
I would recommend this to a mature audience as it contained lots of vulgar words and a few mentions of erotic terms. It would be a great read, particularly to science fiction fanatics out there. Overall, I would say that this is the kind of science fiction story that would keep you from flipping through the next pages as you find yourself immersed in the story.
