The Knights of Chalethire is the fourth book in the We are Voulhire series. It follows the adventures of Galen, Demetrius and Rowan whose bond seems to have gotten even stronger. They are more than ever determined to figure out the nature of the Alcovian rock which harnesses the light power within Demetrius. They are also still on a mission to alert the powers that be of the Demons that have taken over Virko.

Meanwhile, life seems to have gone on as usual in most of the cities that have been affected by the Riva Rohavi’s rampage except Magnum Caelum which was left in ruins. Instead, the trio settles in Chalethire, a city that hosts the infamous Knights of Chalethire. Galen has found work, Demetrius is studying and Rowan trains. Life seems to have settled in for the three of them until they find themselves consumed with guilt over the happenings at Virko. This compels them to seek and join forces with Paladin Harper and her squad of Chalethiren Knights on a quest to Virko lands. However, the plot thickens as we read on to discover the true nature of Harper’s overall plan. Meanwhile, there are other forces in play; other plans are being concocted throughout Voulhire by Meldorath, King Nartik, Maido and Vidius Crodai that, while miles apart, all culminate into one dramatic outcome.

Matthew Tysz’s ability to keep the suspense whilst having the characters reveal tiny bits of pertinent information, albeit at unusual times, keeps me enthralled in this series. It is one of the things that I really like about the author’s writing; he delays revealing the connections between the characters until later in the book or even in the series. Every time I think that I have the full plot worked out in my mind, something new is revealed that makes me wonder, “what else are they keeping secret?” I hope he keeps the little Easter eggs coming!

Sometimes while reading this book, I’ve had to stop to look up a new word or two and I’m still deciding whether that’s a good or a bad thing. That is, I’ve wondered whether others may just gloss over the word and lose the full meaning of the sentence if they’re not particularly interested in stopping to look it up. I also found myself longing to read more from Galen’s perspective than say, King Nartik or Vidius Crodai and was often tempted to skip ahead (if it were not for the need to read everything, I probably would have).

The book seems professionally edited as there are few errors and is written very well. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars as the book has all the elements of intrigue, adventure, suspense and timely climax.

Due to its use of profanity in dialogue and mention of violence, I believe the book is geared towards a more mature audience.
