Review by Karol123 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book in the We are Voulhire series. This is a fantasy book that follows the story of Galen and other Voulhirians as they try to pursue their goals.
A woman being taunted by three men is rescued by a mysterious stranger. Judge Ethis and his colleagues discuss the changing government. Galen and Rowan are informed of the atrocity that happened in Hillport. Galen and his friends arrive in Virko. Folcro inspires the crowd at the dance floor, and Kayden confides in the Soulhirian captain. Galen and Lord Venden agree to help each other. A young attendant tells the Eiodi about a strange disturbance of magic. The Vilendrians get tricked by Meldorath, whereas Folcro finds out about the intrusion of the undercroft. Captain Mendus arrives at another crime scene. Kayden is distraught by the horror he finds at his home. Demetrius’s mission backfires and Virko is under attack. Kayden refuses Folcro’s offer. Galen and his friends arrive at Yamon Soul, but they are refused entrance. King Wilhelm is informed of the Eiodi’s death.
The Fires of Virko is written in both first person and third person point of view. Moreover, this book is narrated in multiple characters’ point of view. This makes the story more interesting as readers get to learn more about these characters’ secret plans and motives. Just like the first book in the series, this book is also exceptionally edited. I did not notice any grammatical error. Even though the book contains profanities, they are not severe.
People in Virko are ambitious. They all seem to have goals they are trying to pursue. In fact, it becomes apparent that while other characters’ goals are for a good cause, other characters’ goals are pure evil. The character development is very good. Each character is well rounded and has a purpose. While some of the characters from the previous book have returned, new characters are also introduced in this book.
The first chapter in this book is a little triggering as there is a hint of abuse. This book is very descriptive. Indeed, it felt as if I was experiencing what the characters were experiencing. The phasing of the story is neither slow nor fast. It is just perfect for the storyline. Furthermore, this book is captivating. I was engrossed from the very first chapter to the last chapter. I also appreciated the plot twists. They kept me on my toes.
What I loved the most about this book was the unpredictability of the plot. I also loved the portrayals of healthy relationships. For instance, I loved the friendship between Galen and his friends. I also loved the way Kayden treated his wife. There is not a single thing I did not love about this book. I loved everything. I rate this book 4 out of 4. It was so enjoyable to read and the character development was great. We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is even much better than the first book in the series. I would recommend this book to people who love Fantasy books. I would also recommend it to people who enjoyed reading We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies.
