We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a compelling and intriguing book. It gets you hooked right from the start, recounting the tale of Meldorath, a powerful mage who overthrows the Lord of Hillport and becomes the new Lord. He is later on considered to be dead so that peace and calm may prevail in Voulhire. However, this appears to be a well-kept secret by the king and his confidants and, a lie waiting to unravel and throw the once peaceful Voulhire into chaos and unrest?

On the other hand, a young man named Galen is in search of freedom from the war and violence that rages in the Land of the Princes. He gets an opportunity to go to the peaceful and prosperous Voulhire after his uncle dies. He is excited about this opportunity as he looks forward to changing his life and have a new beginning. The peace might, however, not last in Voulhire.

Matthew Tysz uniquely explores the world of magic, politics and hope in perfect symmetry with his characterization. He keeps the mystery going as to how the characters relate to each other. The author took his time in developing each character individually. He slowly builds them up, bringing out their connections with other characters.

I loved that the book was well written and an easy flowing read. I had a chance to interact with the characters intimately from Meldorath to Galen to King Wilhelm and even Lord Eldus. Each of them was so well brought out, they made the book a joy to read.

However, I felt as though the book was objectifying women and treating them as objects of service to men. Nevertheless, the book was captivating and immersive, which left me looking forward to reading the next book.

I award this book 4 out of 4 stars as I believe the book was professionally edited and well written. I would recommend it to people who love science fiction with a dark edge. However, I would not recommend the book to a younger audience as it features a degree of sexual intensity and innuendos as well as profanity.
