We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book of We are Voulhire by Matthew Tysz. In a land ruled by King Wilhelm is a city by the name Virko. A city that has developed considerably in technology that the leadership is forced to accept capitalism to increase its economy.

I like how the author teaches that greed for power leads to destruction for instance Virko and Yamon Soul, a neighbouring city. And just like the citizens of Virko, one should not depend on physics alone but also faith and magic. As a leader one should be able to foresee the future of his citizens and think about their well-being, unlike King Wilhelm who was in contrast to Lord Venden.

The next leader of Virko, Folcro, uses magic and forces of darkness to climb to power. He is greedy for power. And in the process of overthrowing Captain Mendus, he uses magic. He does not care about the kind of harm he brings about to the citizens. The King is also so engrossed in patronizing his son that he does not discover his enemies remove people in whom he trusts from leadership. On the other hand, Venden, the lord who built Virko from scratch, cares about his citizens. This causes him to decide to direct the leadership into capitalism from feudalism as this was the well-understood industry by the citizens of Virko. He undertakes this intending to expand the economy and be better than that of Soulhire.

Matthew uses humour and vivid descriptions that keep you captivated as you read through the novel. He employs descriptive words that make it easy to follow the storyline. The humour keeps you laughing for instance, when characters like Alabaster, the senior citizen, converses with Rowan.

I did not like the parts of the description of magic as it was frightening and unrealistic at the same time. For instance, there were demons with pig faces burning the citizens of Virko.

All things considered, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as I enjoyed reading it and could not find grammatical errors since it is professionally edited. I unreservedly recommend this novel to sci-fi and fantasy readers who enjoy a touch of magic and religion. The other thing to take note of is to read the other books in the series as it is not a stand-alone. This will make you clearly to understand the storyline.
