Review by Zubayydah -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second installment in the We Are Voulhire book series. It explores the continuation of Galen Bray's Voulhirian experience. After the events at Hillport, Galen must go to Virko, the industrious hub of the country in order to salvage a deal that could help boost his town of residence, Magnum Cealum's economy. His journey's timing coincides with that of the city's government change. As Virko moves toward becoming a capitalist city, will the previous power holders relinquish their hold so easily? Or are they as eager for this transition as the Virken people?
Matthew Tysz picks up from exactly where he left off in the previous installment of the series. The already dark story takes an even darker turn as readers are introduced to some very twisted characters. The reader also gets to know more about Galen's past, and more about Voulhire and its history, especially that of Virko. The new characters add an entirely different feel to the storyline, while of course keeping with the author's unpredictability. The realms of Cosmos and Caromentis are also further explained. I recommend this book to lovers of detailed storylines for fantasy books, especially dark stories.
I really enjoyed getting to know more about all the story's characters in general. They are one the biggest draws to the book. The range in their personalities was entertaining to read about. The philosophies that characters like the Eodi had were very educational. It was a pleasure to learn from their intelligent minds.
What I loved the most about We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko was the pace. The timeline of the book began shortly after the final event of the previous one and continued at a fast paced rate. As short as it was, it was very intense, with one shocking twist after the other. However, I recommend reading the previous book, We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies before this one in order to better understand the story.
There is nothing about the book that I did not like. It was written in a way that held my attention even while I was not reading it. I also did not find any grammatical or spelling errors throughout the book. I give it a four out four stars rating. This is because this fantasy book is endowed with so much detail that it almost feels real. That is not an easy feat. I appluad Matthew Tysz for this masterpiece.
