We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantastic read! This book combines science and magic in a way that I would never have expected. The description of the book that is found on this website is very accurate when it describes the book as like the first episode of a series. The plot is very character-driven in that it shows how the events affect the characters and not the other way around. This book makes you think about things in your own life.

The main character of this novel comes from what would be considered a third world country in our society. His point of view provides a unique way of looking at the things that people from Voulhire and in our own society take for granted. He is incredibly thankful for the opportunities that he has been given and the experience that he has gained. He is humble and amazed at the type of "luxury" that the people of Voulhire live amongst, while the only luxury he has ever known was the single gas lamp that his grandmother owned long ago. I am interested to see how he deals with the other events that take place and how he is effected by magic in his own humble life.

I found no grammatical errors in this novel. There weren't any formatting errors. The language in this book is clear and easy to understand. This book has obviously been edited professionally. There are no problems in word choice to be seen. You can picture the events of the story in your head as they occur. It is rare for a book to be written in such a way that it draws you in and makes you feel as if you can get lost in the story.

This series is quite obviously meant to be read by adults. This is due to the usage of profanity and allusions to sexual activity, however no actual sex occurs in the book. Fans of fantasy and science fiction alike will definitely enjoy this first novel. It serves as a perfect introduction to the world of Voulhire.

I give this book four out of four stars. It is a fantastic introduction to a world where science and magic are permanently intertwined. The characters are intriguing, and each has a defined personality all their own. I simply cannot wait to continue this series and find out what twists and turns lay in store for them.
