The city of Soulhire has fallen and its people are suffering under the reinstated leader, Lord Meldorath. This is just the beginning of the nation of Voulhire’s perils. Virko’s founder, Lord Venden is on his deathbed after contracting an illness. His final wish is to change the laws of Virko to abolish noble sovereignty in the city. This is all because he doesn’t trust his son Hans alias Folcro, who would have been next in line for the leadership position. Hans has been messing with dark forces well beyond his understanding and the decision does not bode well with him. He is a dark man who craves control and seeks out destruction.

Galen aims to bring prosperity to his new town. Together with his two friends, Rowan and the monk Demetrius, he goes in search of a source of iron in Virko where they have to seek out the ailing lord. On arrival, the monk senses darkness within the manor at the top of the hill which happens to be Lord Vendel’s dwelling place. Will Virko be consumed by the darkness? Find out in the second book in the We Are Voulhire series, We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz.

What I like most about the book is the originality and flow of the plot. The story-line is unique and the author provides an adequate backstory of every character and location in the book. The book consists of diverse characters each with a unique set of characteristics that set them apart from other characters in the book. I like how the author combines the different points of view of the characters into one flowing mass.

My favourite character is the monk, Demetrius. He is fearless and always strives to do what is right. He is also helpful and selfless as he chose to help Galen without getting any monetary compensation. I did not dislike any part of the book.

The book is professionally edited and I did not spot any writing errors. I rate the book a 4 out of 4. The book is riveting and straight to the point. The author does not linger on unnecessary information and each word is vital to the plot development. The plot builds up slowly until it explodes into a much-awaited climax. The story-line is easy to follow and short enough to be read in one sitting. I would recommend I to mature audiences since the main themes are death and destruction. The book also has one instance of rape and public nudity.
