We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in the We are Voulhire series by Mattew Tysz. The first book in this series explored political leadership in a town in Voulhire called Hillport. This second book is focused on Virko. Virko is a city in Voulhire which, controls the economy of the Voulhirian Kingdom. This second book is mainly a continuation of the first book with the addition of a few characters. The lord of Virko, Venden Hrelek, has a terminal illness and is dying. This means that his term is coming to an end. His son, Folcro, the rightful heir to the throne has a dark past that will affect him in the future.

Galen Bray has made friends with Rowan and Demetrius who help him run the forge business. Lord Hrelek asks Galen and his two friends to watch over his son, Folcro. Folcro is learning the research of Meldorath, the most powerful mage in the kingdom. Lord Hrelek asks the trio to get rid of the demon in his house with whom Folcro is suspected to be involved. Will they win this fight or did they overestimate their capabilities? In another part of Voulhire, Meldorath is making malevolent plans.

This book is an interesting read filled with rich language and different themes integrated into the storyline. The book is easy to understand as headings are used to illustrate the discourse of the particular character or setting in the story. The author explores the themes of power, magic, and leadership using vivid descriptions that enable the reader to understand the story. Matthew Tysz is straightforward in his writing and this gives the story a natural flow.

What I liked most about this book is the theme of friendship as presented through Galen, Rowan, and Demetrius. How Galen's simplicity and naivety are presented is commendable. The story is authentic and the backgrounds of the characters are carefully explained thus making it easy to relate to the characters. I, however, found the beginning of the book to be slow and the characters seemed unrelated. The book gets interesting as the connections between the characters are progressively revealed.

There are instances of profanity in the book so I would recommend it to mature readers. The book can also be a trigger as it contains grisly descriptions of killings and violence. Readers who are thrilled by fantasy novels involving the use of magic will also enjoy this book. The book was professionally edited and I did not encounter any errors while reading it. I, therefore, rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.
