Kingdoms. New Worlds. Mysteries. Magic. These are just some of the themes that are exquisitely threaded into one another throughout Matthew Tysz’s We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies.

It introduces a direct conflict on the very first page and sets the reader to the tone that it’ll take until the last page. This does not mean that the book is predictable; on the contrary, its conflict is due to the divide of numerous motivations that are rooted in principles with which a reader can easily relate to. This conflict is seen closer through the lives of the characters and how they interact with one another in a world beautifully written by Tysz. As it is an extremely rich world, the book gives focus on multiple events and various characters through different stories per chapter. However, it’s easy to distinguish the main character since the entire book is written in the third person point of view except for chapters where the reader is traversing Voulhire in Galen Bray’s first-person point of view.

By implementing this technique, Tysz was able to effectively establish a focal point to ground an otherwise intricate narrative for the readers to follow. Due to this, a reader can thoroughly enjoy the deeper dive into layers of thoughts, cultures, titles, and places all around Voulhire and beyond. The book is extremely captivating that one can easily finish it in one sitting and want more of it.

Being the first book of a series that features such a world, however, it tends to be written in blocks of separate stories for each character. It does not flow as easily and can make it a little more difficult to follow than when reading a book with a linear plot. Also, it contains multiple graphic descriptions of violence and gore and references to pedophilia.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is interesting, poignant, and generally just a great book to escape with. The editing is exceptional as well.

I recommend this to readers who enjoy books with medieval times, historical fiction, and fantasy.
