We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book of the We are Voulhire series by Matthew Tysz. It is a fantasy adventure book with a thrilling storyline. This first book serves as an introduction to the rest of the series.

Galen is a young boy from the Land of Princes. He grew up under significant restrictions. The Land of Princes is a place where errors are met with immediate death or slow, methodical torture. Galen's uncle had a dying wish that Galen should take over his steel forge business in Voulhire. He is very pleased to leave behind the poverty and war in his homeland and move to Voulhire to start a new life. He believes that everything will be alright as long as he leaves the Land of Princes. Little does he know where he's headed.

However, in Voulhire, the citizens are in a state of panic. Powerful and cruel Lord Meldorath is the reason for this situation. He was caught performing despicable acts on people when he was the Lord of Hillport. King Wilhelm Marcolo had ordered cruel Meldorath to be executed. But suddenly, rumors stated that Meldorath was still alive. Meanwhile, Lord Eldus was appointed as the new Lord of Hillport by King Wilhelm. Lord Eldus swears to cure Hillport of the cruelty that once engulfed the town. But will he be successful?

This book takes you to a world full of historical adventure, a world where spirituality and religion are mixed with magic. It has an extensive and engaging plot which makes it hard to put the book down. I was so thrilled by the story that I finished reading the book in two days. My most favorite aspect about this book is that it starts with a map of Voulhire along with its towns, so you have a very clear picture of where all the events are taking place. The description of all the characters and their surroundings is very detailed. It gives you a clear picture of the scenario which makes you feel that you are present at the location and all the events are happening right in front of your eyes.

The story is written in first-person and third-person (Galen) perspective. The backstories of some of the characters are given in the form of diaries and journals which gives the author bonus points for his creative approach. The only thing I dislike about the book is how the author abruptly ends stories leaving some loose ends. However, all these loose ends come together in the subsequent books of the series. Therefore I advise the readers to read all the books in the series to have a clear picture of all the characters and the events happening.

Considering all these points, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The language used is very simple. The author makes your imagination run wild with the storyline and detailed descriptions. I did not come across any errors or typos, so the book seems to be professionally edited. Profanities do exist, hence I would not recommend this book to young readers. This story is an absolute treat for all fantasy-lovers.
