We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is an interesting, captivating, and well-crafted science fiction written by one of the talented authors known as Matthew Tysz. It is the first installment in the series of “We are Voulhire." There are compelling reasons why I preferred this book over the others during my selection. This includes the title and its eye-catching cover page.

At the beginning of this delightful book, we’re introduced to Galen Bray—the protagonist of the story. He is running away from his motherland (Land of Princes) because of a prolonged war that has caused a lot of suffering to people. Galen is immigrating to Voulhire to escape from a war-torn land and to inherit his late uncle’s (Galen Onita) forge as stated in his will that he had left in the hands of Rowan (his executor) before kicking the bucket.

On his arrival in Magnum Caelum, a city in the Voulhire kingdom, he is heartily welcomed by Rowan. The duo immediately became good friends. Rowan plays a significant role by ensuring that Galen gets his inheritance, which rightfully belonged to him according to his uncle’s will. Unlike the Land of Princes, the kingdom of Voulhire—under the leadership of King Wilhelm Arcolo—is experiencing peace and economic prosperity. The king appointed one of his close associates (Lord Eldus Alderman) to re-establish the town of Hillport—which had been ruined and impoverished under the bad leadership of Lord Orlin and General Meldorath.

I enjoyed the whole story; it was interesting and fully packed with action. Tysz has proven his talent in writing by crafting this wonderful story that will keep its readers at the edge of their seats. He also added flavor to the story by using both first-person and third-person points of view while narrating this delightful story. The language used is simple and easy to understand. The characters were well-developed, and this enhanced the flow of the story.

The book is short (about 153 pages); therefore, it requires minimum time to read. The inclusion of the map of the kingdom of Voulhire at the beginning of the book sheds more light on the places mentioned throughout the story. One thing I liked about this book is how it’s sectioned into small chapters, making it easy to read the whole story without confusion. However, there are multiple aspects I did not like about the book: the development of the story was slow, and its beginning was mind-numbing—this can easily deter readers from reading the book.

Throughout the story, Galen became my most-liked character. I liked his bravery; he makes a tough decision by setting off to a strange territory (kingdom), not minding what might happen to him. My least-liked character is Meldorath. He was a wicked leader and used his leadership position not to serve the people of Hillport but for his selfish interest. This resulted in the downfall of the whole town. My favorite part of this delightful book is the description given about the Feast of Human Hands; it was my most interesting section of the book.

Magic, war, culture, betrayal, science, education, power, friendship, and technology are some themes portrayed in this thought-provoking story. The author did a wonderful job while deciding on the book’s cover page; it is amazing and could easily catch my attention. It was well edited; I found zero errors in it. I encountered instances of profane words and sexual content while reading.

I rate, We are Voulhire: A new Arrival under Great Skies 4 out of 4 stars. It was well written, and its plot was intriguing. Giving it a lower rating would be unjust. I recommend it to adults (because of the sexual content in the book) who love science fiction books that combine fantasy and adventure.
