We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the riveting sequel of the We Are Voulhire series. With changing perspectives and intersecting plot lines, Tysz sets the stage for a compelling tale of magic and ruin.

The book follows main character Galen Bray with friends Demetrius and Rowan on their journey into the city of Virko, a place recently becoming economically prominent. Virko’s Lord Venden, sickly and in rapid decline, asks that the three men rid his manner of the evil darkness his son has become intertwined with. Galen and his friends must find support in a town where people either don't know anything is wrong, ignore it in hopes it will go away, or are controlling the darkness. In other places in Voulhire, a powerful and seemingly unstoppable mage grows his reach into the minds of the citizens, forms alliances, and forges his own path towards great destruction.

The Fires of Virko is well structured and easy to follow. Even with all of the intertwining plot lines, the chapters are ordered in a way that gives the reader insight into what is happening with each set of characters and how those things might influence the others later. The only thing that did stand out to me as odd was that some of the perspectives of characters didn’t get entirely wrapped up. However, looking back I think that it is clear that this was done so that certain character’s plot lines could be continued in the next book.

I would recommend this book to people who are interested in things like magic and mystery. There are many instances where the author creates looming suspense in order to keep the audience engaged, making it a hard book to put down. There is in the beginning and towards the middle of the book brief reference or mention of sexaul assault, so if that is a topic that you are not comfortable with, just know that it is addressed in the first chapter and in a paragraph in the middle of the book but not mentioned between or after those portions. That chapter and paragraph would be able to be skipped without missing any significant plot alterations.

This book is very well edited, as there were no typos, grammar errors, or spelling errors. There are no direct descriptions of explicit content, but there are references to sex and sexual assault. Profanity is used many times throughout the book. I am giving The Fires of Virko a 4 out of 4 stars rating due to its exceptional editing and ability to keep the reader engaged.
