Review by Shay-1 -- The Omicron Six by Endy Wright
When’s reading “The Omicron Six” by Endy Wright you will be moved by the relatable but extraordinary characters and their experiences. In the beginning you meet two ordinary boys with separate lives, Cooper and Coupe. Cooper is a silent boy loved by those around him. He lives in a world where the chaos from his surroundings worm their way into his brain until he is overwhelmed by the world itself. He learns to survive in a world where he hears more than most by placing a wall with his silence in order to try and quiet down the world and maintain his sanity. Coupe was different from Cooper. He didn’t have any walls to guard him from the world. He was out there bearing the brunt of the bad things the world had to offer. He had no friends, no family, no one he could rely on. He lived a painful life with trauma after trauma that made him stronger and weaker at the same time. Cooper and Coupe grew up fighting their own battles until that day where it all changed. They day they found each other. Cooper finally found someone who could break past his wall and into his mind to form an unbreakable bond. Coupe found his first friend who was strong enough to help build a wall to protect him from the world. Their bond grew stronger each day as they worked together to overcome their pasts, protect the present, and build a future together as a family. You read along and learn how they turn disability and pain into a superpower while remaining painfully human all the same.
There are many positive aspects to this novel, and one of them was the characters themselves. All the characters is the book are extremely relatable because they have real world problems and disabilities. Cooper perceives people differently than most people would, he notices more and get overwhelmed easily by the people around him. This makes him more human and gives people with the same problems a hero to look up to. He is not extraordinary regardless of his shortcomings, but because of them. He doesn’t hide his flaws but grows to accept them and become awesome because of the very thing he struggled with in the past. Coupe lived a very rough life and experienced many traumas. He is fast and smart and lives every day moving forward regardless of how his past tries to drag him down. He lived through some of the worse things that should never happen to anyone, much less a child. He becomes extraordinary while carrying some of the biggest weights in the world. These characters give hope to all those struggling that the future is not yet decided by the past and that it is possible to thrive regardless of what the world throws at you.
There are no negative aspects to the novel that I noticed. No spelling or grammar errors. The plot was very good and the story fresh. It was a very good read.
I would rate this book four out of four stars. I didn’t find any errors or negative aspects in the novel. I loved reading every line of it and I was always on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. I laughed and smiled when the characters were happy. I cried when they had fights and their bond was in danger. I got mad when I learned of Coupe’s past. This book took me through all the emotions I needed to grow to love these characters and feel like their pain and their victory’s were my own.
I would strongly recommend this book to most people but especially to teens and young adults. The characters are teens that are growing up and learning what it is to be strong and live in a world that is a scary place. But through human connection as friends and family, they learn to love each other and life itself as it is. Their strength along with their struggles make relatable characters that everyone can learn to love as well as inspire them to become stronger themselves. You aren’t born great, you become great through overcoming the past.
