We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is the second book of the We are Voulhire series. The author continues from where he left off from the first book and takes us back into the chaos that is Voulhire. Galen and his new friends, Rowan and Demetrius leave to Virko to get more iron for the people of Magnum Caelum. But unknown to them is a darkness in Virko ready to be unleashed to destroy them all.

Virko is a young but prosperous industrial town built by Lord Venden. On his deathbed, he decides to contact the king to turn Virko towards total capitalism and hence reducing the policing power of the lords. But this is not his only dying wish. He asks the young monk-Demetrius to find and destroy the source of the darkness hovering over Rendenhide (his home). Will the three companions get what they seek in Virko? Or will the darkness of this God-less town consume them?

The characterization is a huge part of this book, with so many characters from the previous book returning and new characters added as well. Characters like Lord Meldorath are continuously plotting and implementing their plans of not only taking over Hillport but all of Voulhire one city at a time. I loved how distinct and unique each character was, and how much they grow with every experience. Galen especially has come a long way from the refugee from the Land of the Princes. He is changing and slowly integrating himself into the Voulhirian lifestyle, without losing his modesty. I appreciated how much effort the author put into character development.

The book had themes like religion, magic, power, and companionship which moved the story forward and kept me wanting more. These major themes along with well-developed characters and the author’s skill in description, created a world so real and relatable. I was especially impressed by the well-thought-out and detailed descriptions of buildings, scenes, and characters’ physical appearances which gives the reader a perfect visual experience of the world he created.

Furthermore, the author removed the need for chapters by writing the story through the different perspectives of the major characters. I found this to be incredibly unique and genius. The reader gets not only one but many perspectives of events making them less judgmental and more understanding of the characters. I felt more connected to the characters as I read through their actions and understood why they made every move and their emotional states through it all.

There was absolutely nothing I hate about this book, and I therefore rate it 4 out of 4 stars . It is well-written, well-edited, and very entertaining. I am very excited to read the next book of the series to continue on this fascinating journey into the world of Voulhire. I recommend this book to adult fantasy readers. This book does contain; sexual references, gory scenes, and frequent use of profanity. Readers sensitive to the above issues may avoid picking up this book.
