Fearing that his sons were conspiring to overthrow him, a great king divides four islands among his four sons. However, they get involved in a civil war for many years as every son tries to own all four islands; much to the delight of their father. It is during this time that Galen, a survivor of this war travels to Voulhire where he inherits his uncle's wealth. Which adventures lie ahead of him in Voulhire? Will he manage to fit into his uncle's shoes as a master blacksmith? When a powerful mage is arrested and held prisoner on accounts of experimenting with bio-magic, a new lord is appointed to replace him. Because of his wicked reputation, everyone is led to believe that he is dead. All this while he sits in his cell; plotting his vengeful return. The new lord, unlike his predecessors, is a good man; he has great plans for the future of his town. Among other things, he'd increase the town's output and provide education to the townspeople who are only fishermen. He'd also help the town heal from the affliction it suffered at the hands of its former lords. However, this attracts the attention of the Riva Rohavi - a terrorist group whose sole purpose is destruction and binder in growth. A mysterious rock is found in Alcovia that attracts the attention of both Galen and the dark lord. Galen engages the services of a rare scholar to try and determine the nature of this rock. What secrets does it hold?

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a science fiction book and the first entry in the "We are Voulhire" series by the same author. As such, it is mostly an introduction to the world of Voulhire. Not much character and plot development are done which may be disappointing for many readers. In the beginning, it is hard to understand what the book is about and most people might get bored or stop reading it. I'd suggest checking out the "extended reading" sections to give some familiarity with the world of Voulhire.

I love the author's ability to vividly describe the scenes, thereby fully immersing the reader in the book. I loved Galen's adventures in Voulhire; from his visit to the mines of Alcovia to meeting an "imbuer" at Yamon Soul. At times his character was so vividly described I felt like I was Galen himself. Overall, the book is an interesting read and I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. Although the plot is vague at first which is somehow discouraging, the lack of typos or errors is a good effort by the author. Also, there is very minimal use of profane language or sexual content. I would recommend the book to science fiction lovers; with a touch of magic, ancient kingdoms, and epic adventures.
