We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book of the We are Voulhire series by Matthew Tysz. This is a science-fiction book that blends fantasy and mystery in a magical way.

There is havoc in Voulhire lands due to dark magic. The violent rebels, the Riva and Rohavi have returned and are attacking Hillport. This has left Lord Eldus, his family, and almost half the residents of hillport murdered. On the other hand, Galen along with his newfound friends has gone to Virko looking for a contract that would assure them access to iron. Galen wants to use his blacksmith skills to help in developing Magnum Caelum. Unfortunately, the attack on Hillport has interfered with a great deal of iron supply from Alcosia to Magnum Caelum, where Galen owns the forge that was passed down to him by his deceased uncle. Despite being the most productive city in Voulhire, Virko is gradually getting caught up in church politics and reforms.

Folcro, the son of Lord Venden Hrelek was an evil recluse. He secretly studied old spiritual books written by authors that had been marked dangerous by the church. Lord Venden was a troubled man even on the brink of death due to his son's disputable actions and interests. Folcro had bounded a demon in Rendenhide's undercroft. Nobody had an idea about his intentions behind this task but Lord Venden was worried about its emergence from the undercroft. When Galen and his friends meet the dying Lord, he asks for a rather frightening favor. He begs them to release the bounded demon. But will they be successful?

How the author creates new worlds is impeccable. Even though the story is set in a new world, he has provided a clear map of Voulhire at the beginning which is my favorite part about the book. He has provided every little detail that you need. The characters have been developed very well. The story is written n both first-person and third-person narration. This helps us in understanding how each character views a particular situation differently. The only thing I dislike is that, just like the first book of this series, this book also contains some loose ends which eventually come together in the subsequent novels. Therefore, I recommend reading the entire series to be able to fully appreciate the storyline.

This book is a character-driven novel, filled with action, excellent dialogues between characters, and an amazing description of magical activities. It showcases the advantages and disadvantages of capitalism and the moral degradation of society.

Considering all the factors mentioned above, I would like to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It has been edited very well, as I did not come across any errors. It contains vulgarism and mild nudity, hence, I would not recommend it to the young audience. The story is very captivating and well suited for all fantasy-lovers.
