Review by Vivdija -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival unde...
What makes a man a brutal killer? Matthew Tysz takes a stab at answering this question in We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies.
The story begins with an attack at the palace in Hillport, a town in Voulhire. Lord Orlin is brutally murdered by Meldorath who alleged that Orlin had sexually assaulted children. After Orlin's death, Meldorath took over the lordship. However, his rulership was short-lived because the king sent soldiers to arrest him. No one knows what happened to him thereafter. Was there any truth to his allegations about Lord Orlin? Could Meldorath be dead? What will happen to Hillport? Who will be the next ruler? Will the next ruler be like his predecessors? You will have to read the book to find out the answers to these questions.
There are many characters in this book like Lord Eldus Alderman, Dalehei Meldorath, Galen Bray and King Wilhelm Arcolo who play an integral role in the story. Meldorath is a man who instils great fear among the people because he possesses great magical powers. Galen, on the other hand, is a naive 28-year-old man whose character is greatly influenced by his upbringing. Galen’s naivety is portrayed through the words that he speaks. My favourite character is Lord Eldus. This is because he is a man with a vision and has great plans for Hillport. I loved that he wanted to take the town to greater economic heights and went an extra mile to find out more about his predecessors. I disliked Meldorath because he brutally killed innocent people.
The main themes of this book are magic, politics and religion. The Voulhirians believed in magic and had many different mages. The writer vividly described his characters and different events. I loved how he described the celebration that took place in Soulhire. I could picture the event in my head as I read how events unfolded. There was humour in the book as well. I laughed as I read Galen’s point of view.
There are two things that I loved the most about this book. First, the map that is drawn before the prologue. It was easy to understand the geographical location of the various towns using the map. The second thing I loved is how the writer developed his characters in detail. I was able to understand the reasons behind the actions of various characters due to this. In as much as I loved the plot of this book, I am of the view that the writer should have included more female characters.
This book was professionally edited. I didn’t notice any errors. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is very intriguing. The book is suitable for people who love reading about magic because magic one of the main themes in the book.
