The book, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is about a tale of a great kingdom, magic, science, politics, religion, war, hope and even gratitude. It tells a story of a man, Galean Bray, who flees his war-torn country to start a new life in the Kingdom of Voulhire. One gets to experience this new world through this character’s eyes; the reader gets to see his naïve outlook on issues and go on his adventures too. The book also follows the life of Lord Eldus Alderman. The king of Voulhire has given him the position of Lord over the small seaside town of Hillport. Lord Eldus has been tasked with making this town be more industrious and explore its potential. However, his well-meaning efforts are met with a town and people still haunted by their past leadership and the effect it had on their lives.

The book was a page-turner. The captivating storyline kept my attention till the end of the book. This being the first book in the series, the author has done a splendid job of laying down a good foundation for the development of this story in the books to follow. A reader can see this from the beginning of the book up to the last page, where the stories of all these characters are starting to come together.

I enjoyed how the author infused all these themes of politics, magic, religion, politics, and the existence of another world into his story. When one is reading the book, you truly appreciate how the author has taken the time to develop each character’s story by focusing each chapter on a person. It also helped in effortlessly understanding the storyline.

I also relish how the author teases out the story of the antagonist, Lord Meldorath, in the book. His first appearance was at the beginning of the book when, at first, you aren’t sure what exactly is happening but all through the story, you can see his presence lingering even though he does not make an appearance for most of the part. This adds to the fun and anticipation while reading because you are unaware of what he is planning next. The way the author Matthew Tysz describes the sceneries and locations in his book gives the reader a clear imaginative picture while reading, giving one a pleasant experience. One can see the image the author is trying to paint clearly in their mind. I also love how the book comes to an end, with the beginning of a conflict that has been building up through the book, which makes a person eager to read the next book to find out what happens next.

I really couldn’t mention any part of the book I disliked. It was a good read for me. I am giving it a rating of 4 out of 4. The book seems to be professionally edited because there were no grammatical errors in the book. There is the use of crass language in the book, even though it was not to a great extent, so I wouldn’t recommend this book to any reader sensitive to this kind of language. However, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy story with magic, science, a whole different world and a story so well written, it will leave you wanting to read the next book to find out what happens next.
