We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is the beginning of an exciting science fiction/fantasy series by Matthew Tysz. Voulhire is a wondrous kingdom in the Cosmos, the physical universe, but many of her people have connections with Caromentis, the magical universe. One such man, Lord Dalehei Meldorath, quickly becomes one of the main focal points of the story. He’s powerful and dangerous, and King Wilhelm wants the people of Voulhire to believe he’s no longer a threat.

The other half of the story focuses on Galen Bray, a young man newly arrived from the Lands of the Princes. When his dying uncle is finally able to find him and send for him, Galen receives the opportunity of a lifetime. He travels to Voulhire to start a new life for himself away from the suffering and grief in the Lands of the Princes. As he tries to gain his footing in this new life as a blacksmith in Magnum Cealum, he quickly gains a few friends who help him on his way.

I really enjoyed this book! I especially liked the character of Galen Bray. His naivety, humility, gratefulness, and generosity make him very loveable. You can tell those are the qualities that his new friends appreciate about him as well, and it really contrasts with many of their own attributes at times.

I also enjoyed the complexity and mystery surrounding Lord Meldorath, King Wilhelm, and the many other groups and individuals who seem to be vying for the attention of the people of Voulhire. I feel that the author kept giving me just enough information to make me feel like I was about to really understand what was happening, only to then throw another curveball. This book certainly kept me reading because I wanted answers. I wanted to understand the relationships and motivations behind the events that were taking place.

The only thing I would say I disliked at times was that the author jumped back and forth between the two main storylines. This by itself wasn’t a problem, however, what did make it a little jarring was that in Galen’s storyline, the author uses first person. In the larger storyline, it’s written in limited third person perspective.

I gladly give We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies 4 out of 4 stars. It’s an excellent start to a series with a lot of potential. I only found one grammatical error while reading, so I believe it’s been professionally edited. This book does contain some profanity and a few references to sexual crimes. Older teenagers would likely be just fine reading this book. I think anyone who enjoys an exciting science fiction/fantasy novel would enjoy giving this book a chance!
