Review by Cynthia Ray -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival ...
In a world where having power and holding unto it is everything, many people will do unspeakable things to others to have and retain said power, even to their own sons. This is the case for the Emperor of Lullabies. He is a king with unfathomed control of magic. He is a king whose desire to never leave his throne causes him to pit his four sons, The Princes, against each other, a decision that has caused a never-ending war in their lands. Of course, it is common knowledge that when princes fight, their subjects will suffer. The unnecessary war between these Princes transformed their islands from once thriving and prosperous places to graveyards and have left their people hopeless. It became a place where you either died by the sword or from slow starvation.
On one of these Lands of the Princes lives a young man, Galen Bray, who would love nothing more than to hop on a ship and disappear from the graveyard he calls home. His opportunity to do just that comes when the executor of his uncle's estate arrives in his hometown to notify him of the fact that he, Galen, is the sole beneficiary and heir to his uncle's little fortune in Magnum Caelum, Voulhire. His arrival to Voulhire, the land of magic, riches, and good fortune marks a new beginning for him, but not in the way that he would have guessed in a thousand years. His quest for white iron in the mining town of Alcovia quickly turns into an adventure that uncovers secrets, brings him new friends, and shapes him into a different person. Meanwhile, plans are underway to bring harm and destruction to all of Voulhire. The conspirators will bid their time and strike when they are ready.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in We are Voulhire series. The book is more or less like an introduction to the world of Voulhire and although it lacks the action or climax that are typical of many books out there, it gives readers a taste of things to come in subsequent books in the series. That aside, there is so much to love about this book. To be honest, I like everything about the book, from the plot to the characters and the length of it. The one thing (or person) I like above all others is Galen's uncle's executor, Rowan. Okay, call me crazy, but I'm a sucker for sarcasm and I am a lover of those who have mastered the art of using them. And Rowan is my man. I find his sense of humor very refreshing. He is one of the reasons why I couldn't stop reading the story until I got to the end of the book.
As long as dislikes go, I must say that I have none where We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is concerned. Apart from how interesting the book is to me, one other thing that stood out is the fact that it was exceptionally edited. I did not notice a single typo in it (which is quite rare in books). I am greatly appreciative of that.
Because I like everything about the book (from the first page till the last), I feel that this book merits a full rating, I really do. The interesting plot, tone, character, and exceptional editing are responsible for my decision to rate this book that high. On that note, I gladly give this novel a rating of four out of four stars. This book is best suited for fans of magic fiction and adventure novels. If you fit that description, then I wholeheartedly encourage you to grab a copy of this book.
