We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is a fantasy book by Matthew Tysz.

Lord Eldus the previous lord of Hillport came to an agreement with the mining town Alcovia to supply food in exchange for iron. Hoping that the forge in Magnum Caelum could sell more equipment to all of Voulhire after acquiring more iron. After Lord Eldus' death, however the industrial city Virko buys the iron that was promised to Magnum Caelum, this therefore results in the scarcity of iron for the forge so Galen Bray the owner rides to Virko with his companions to acquire some iron. Lord Venden Hrelek of Virko agrees to supply Galen with all the iron he will need but on condition that Galen's friend, a monk named Demetrius promises to exorcise a demon in the basement under the control of his son Hans Hrelek. What seemed to be a reasonable and simple request to accomplish at first turns out to be more than they bargained for and sets catastrophic events in motion.

What I loved about this book was the author's ability to fit so much content into a book of only 158 pages, the plot was concise and pleasant to read, and there was an abundance of character development. A descriptive style of writing employed by the author was a welcome addition to an already extraordinary book as it helped me picture the scenes vividly, and made the action scenes even more exhilarating.

I did not find anything about this book unpleasant. It kept me intrigued and entertained from beginning to end. Which is the most important aspect that a book should fulfill, it should entertain and transport the reader to a different world that is something this book achieves exceedingly well.

Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars due to it being such a joy to read, and this book's unique charm all make it worth a perfect rating in my opinion. An engaging plot is the icing on the cake as it was easy to follow, but not overly simplistic.

I recommend this book to readers that are fans of fantasy books. This is book two of the "We are Voulhire series", best to read book one, We are Voulhire: New Arrival under Great Skies before reading this book. Regardless of whether you have read the first book, rest assured that you will be fond of this book. Reading the first book before book two is recommended though.

I too enjoyed the book. My favourite aspects were the magic parts and the parts featuring Galen and his friends and Meldorath.

How Matthew manages to fit all this content into his books is baffling.He is a really amazing author.

Food for iron, that seems like an ethics issue. It seems to me like the iron miners will get the short end of the straw on this one. Thanks for your review.

The deal was for crayfish (should have elaborated on that

) to be delivered to Virko. This is was considered a fair trade because crayfish in Voulhire was a delicacy reserved for the nobles with fat wallets. Miners drew the short straw long before this trade was agreed upon. It was a fair trade but Virko only agreed to this deal as a favour to Lord Eldus.

I have been looking at this series for awhile more trying to decide if I should read it! I definitely think I will after reading your review! It sounds like an interesting story and I love that there’s great character development.

I also found this book entertaining and difficult to put down. However, there is a significant amount of gory violence in the text, and that was the thing I disliked the most.

Glad you enjoyed it too as for the gore I didn't find it disturbing, personally I believe that without the gore that this book would not be as entertaining. Meldorath's attack on Hillport in the first book was filled to the brim with gory details, and it was because of that gore that I got goosebumps when reading the book. It helped me connect with the characters and picture the scene better, a mage who would crush soldiers against a wall is better than a mage who will cast some generic fire spell and so forth.

Then again I've never really been bothered by gore or profanity. Guess I'm kinda weird and somewhat different from most folk.
