Review by caina3 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz adds new characters and takes the danger up a level in this second book in the series. The reader will encounter demons and their human equals in this Sci-Fi/Fantasy tale. Most of the story takes place in Virko, a city with a dark secret. The heads of industry want the town to operate based on the goods they produce and to remove the noble influences that run everything. Galen and his friends must travel to Virko to get the iron to run the forge and get caught up in this political transition and encounter supernatural interference during their visit. Meanwhile, the Eiodi researches a new virus a local doctor discovered and commissions his people to learn everything they possibly can about it. Meldorath finally decides on his next move, and putting it into action changes Yamon Soul to its core.
The central theme in the story is the control of other people. The heads of industry in Virko want to control the city allowing the exchange of goods and services to create their wealth; the nobles must relinquish their power for this to occur. Venden Hrelek, the current lord of Virko, is very ill and his son, Hans, is next in line to take over as Virko's next lord. Sadly, Hans has a very sinister mind and takes it upon himself to punish those who deny their true nature. It is unclear if his exposure to demons or his mother's death is the catalyst to his disturbing behavior. Regardless, when it comes to monsters, one can never tell if you are controlling them or if they are controlling you. Lastly, the calculating Lord Meldorath is the winner gaining the most control of them all.
I continue to enjoy the adventures of Galen and his friends. They are the main characters that have kept my interest in the series. My favorite part of the story is when they face a dark entity. The suspense and action in the scene got me hooked, and I wanted more. I am a huge fan of following the good guys and relating to their struggles as they learn to fight and overcome evil.
I enjoyed the book. There are many different characters with their agendas, quirks, and motives; I never became bored. However, there was one scene in the story that I did not care for because it was too gory for my liking; I thought it was disturbing.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The book is edited professionally, and I found minimal grammatical errors. I do not feel justified in removing a whole star because one scene did not agree with me; the rest of the story was a satisfying read. I recommend this book to individuals who enjoy science fiction or fantasy storylines. There are several instances where vulgar language and mature, explicit subject matter are used and caution readers who may be sensitive to those ideas.
