Review by TalJB22 -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in Matthew Tysz’s science fiction/fantasy series. In this second installment, we continue to follow two intertwined storylines. The main story focuses heavily on the powerful industrial hub that is the city of Virko. The structure of Virko’s government has become a heated topic of conversation recently, as the dying lord of the city pushes for the leading business men to be given the rule of the city instead of passing lordship onto his son. The man known as Folcro, along with other powerful men of the city, have their own ideas regarding what should happen next in Virko.
The secondary storyline continues to follow the blacksmith-in-training, Galen Bray. He and his companions get caught up in the mess of politics and evil happenings in Virko. They try to help and are forced to make some difficult decisions. They meet some allies and some enemies, and they come face-to-face with more than a few monsters.
I greatly enjoyed the complexity the author continues to develop in this series. There are numerous characters, but they all play a part in the story. It doesn’t seem as though any of the characters are wasted, and I appreciate that. I enjoyed seeing the important, overarching storylines be continued from the first book, but I really liked the author’s decision to have this book take place almost entirely in new areas of Voulhire.
As much as I did enjoy the complex storytelling and the interesting characters, this book in the series got a little too dark and gruesome for my taste. There were dark and terrible deeds discussed in the first book, but I feel that this book took those things to a new level. This book contains some pretty grisly deaths and frightening themes. The book continues to deal with magic, but the supernatural is thrown in much more in this second book.
That being said, I gladly give We Are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz four out of four stars. It is an exciting science fiction/fantasy adventure. It is well written, and it seems to have been professionally edited as well. I only found a couple of grammatical errors as I read.
As I said, it does deal with some dark topics, such as demons and gruesome deaths. Because of those facts and the multiples uses of strong language, I would recommend this book be reserved for older audiences. Anyone who enjoys science fiction/fantasy and doesn’t mind darker themes would likely enjoy picking this book up!
