Review by Vivdija -- We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko
It is always said that looks can be deceiving and we should never underestimate people. This is what the people of Virko soon realised. In this book, Matthew Tysz mainly focuses on the city of Virko in Voulhire. We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the second book in the We are Voulhire series.
Virko was the most prosperous city in Voulhire. It was started by Lord Venden. The city had modern buildings and many businessmen. Lord Venden wanted to end the noble sovereignty in Virko. Leadership positions would be occupied by businessmen and bankers. This idea pleased the businessmen. They started planning how they would rule Virko after the death of Lord Venden. They were sure that Hans, Lord Venden’s son, would not be an obstacle. Hans was supposed to rule Virko after the death of his father. Hans was a quiet person who never interacted with other people. He spent most of his time reading. The people of Voulhire viewed him as a weakling who would never fight for the throne. Little did they know that there is more to what meets the eye. Hans was a wolf in a sheep’s clothing. He had a weapon that would destroy Virko. What was the weapon? Who will save Virko? You will have to read the book to find the answers to these questions.
Hans Hrelek, Venden Hrelek, Kayden, Meldorath, Galen and Demetrius are some of the characters in this book. Most of the characters had been introduced in book one of the series. Hans is depicted as an evil man who loves manipulating others. Lord Venden, on the other hand, is a man who wants to protect Virko. This is why he wanted to end the noble sovereignty. The main themes of this book are deceit, magic and war.
One thing I loved about this book is that the writer vividly described his characters. As a result, it was easy to know and understand their emotions, moods and decisions. I understood the frustrations of Demetrius due to the author's descriptions. The events were also described in detail. I could picture what happened when Galen and his companions fled the city.
There is nothing that I disliked about this book. The book was well edited because I did not notice any errors. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is intriguing. This book would appeal to anyone who has read the first book and people who love reading about magic. It would be unsuitable for children because of the use of profanities.
