Review by swathi_0909 -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival ...
A few pages into reading We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies, I got the idea that this is going to be a thrilling book. Being the first book of the series, it lays the groundwork for our introduction to a whole new universe where people and magic exist hand in hand. The story is presented as scenes from different parts of the kingdom, Voulhire, occurring simultaneously so you get an eagle view of it. Set in a pre-electricity era, it recounts the journey of the narrator to the kingdom of Voulhire and his discovery of a new world, contrasting to the world he knew and grew up in. Along with his newly found basic human comforts, we also get a sneak peek of the gifted individuals of Voulhire and the 'superpowers' they possess. The author's love for people has been delineated in the range of emotions the characters of the story go through. What the comfort of a warm meal and bed can mean to a person who has only known survival in a harsh environment his whole life is depicted beautifully here.
The flow of events in the book is captivating and leaves you wondering about the plot. The book is very well edited and the language is appealing. The intentions of the characters, whether good or bad, are not easily revealed so this is a book where you can not take sides with the characters. And oh, the description of the castles, the churches, and the attire of people really take you to the middle ages. Mystery, suspense, politics...this book has it all. If you love the concept of controlling elements that form the warp and woof of the entire cosmos with one's mind and those supernatural abilities like I do, then this book is for you.
The story might seem slow-paced at the beginning but I wouldn't consider it much of a drawback since this is the first book of a series, the foundation of the characters and the grasp of the plot is necessary to fathom what's coming next. So readers, give it some time and you'll be anxious to finish the book and read the next part.
I will give 4 out of 4 stars for the overall portrayal of the characters and the storyline. Matthew Tysz has created a multiverse in which Voulhire lies and I, for one, can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I would recommend this book to everyone who loves good fiction with a tinge of reality to it.
