Official Review: On the Trail of the Wind's Tears
Friendship plays a big role in cementing relationships in Lynne Armstrong-Jones’ story, On the Trail of the Wind’s Tears: A Sequel to On the Trail of the Ruthless Warlock. When Veras’ husband’s, Nico’s, whereabouts were unknown after the War of the Borders, it was Veras’ friend and fellow midwife, Meg, who offered her the much-needed respite and hope. Earlier, Nico and his friend, Joul, fought valiantly in the war, each complementing the other’s fighting style. In the end, they had both been rewarded with apartments in the king’s palace.
Even so, these friendships were put to test when the Witch of the Great East Wood was taken ill, especially the friendship between Veras and the younger Creda, a sorceress who was once Veras’ student (acolyte) in the magical arts. The Witch of the Great East Wood had played a pivotal role in the defeat of the warlock during The Great Quest, a mission that had the king’s blessings. With the Witch of the Great East Wood’s health failing fast, Veras and Creda waste no time in organizing another operation to visit her. They arrange a multidisciplinary expedition comprising warriors, practitioners of the magical arts, and their novices.
I enjoyed this story because it brought out strongly the importance of working together in any given task. The characters had developed and mustered a shared approach of teaming together, regardless of seniority, profession, or age. At one tense moment, Superior Xyron (one of the other sorcerers in the group) was forced to give out his robe to a warrior (Joul), so that they could keep their identities a secret. Furthermore, when Veras fell pregnant, she went out of practice and relinquished control of the Tower of Giefan (school of sorcery) to Creda. Besides, we saw the sorcerers in the group valuing the opinion of one of the warrior novices (Giever), even though he had no training in sorcery.
On the other hand, I didn’t find anything to dislike about the story. To the author’s credit, the novel is exceptionally well edited. Moreover, its plot elements were well presented to leave the ending unpredictable. The book can also be read as a standalone novel. I, as a result, rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
Lastly, this book helped me attune myself to the spiritual aspects of nature. I recommend it to anyone interested in spellcraft or who wants to draw inspiration out of nature. Nonetheless, it may be least suited for anyone averse to change.
