The Treachery of Beautiful Things by Ruth Frances Long

Post by b624 »

This book follows the adventure of Jenny, a stubborn, persistent, seventeen-year-old girl, who is on the quest to rescue her older brother. He had gotten stolen by the trees in the forest near their house. To try and get some closure, Jenny visits that spot seven years later only to be lured into the mysterious world herself. She enlists help from a mysterious boy named Jack, whom she had met after getting tangled in a sticky situation. She learns that everything is not as it seems and about love and sacrifice.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I had some trouble getting into it at first. The beginning is a bit slow but it picks up quickly and stays at a nice pace. Usually books are very predictable and I can determine the outcome quite early in the book; however, this one was very well written and the author revealed pieces slowly one by one and utilized foreshadowing a bit. She made an art of telling you what you need to know and then developed and built on it as the story wore on. I like how she didn't reveal everything at once. It gave more depth to the story. It is difficult to find stories like these. I highly recommend this book. It is one of the best books I've read this year.
