Review by ViviVivid -- We are Voulhire: A New Arrival un...
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a fantasy novel, set in the fictional land of Voulhire. This is the first book in the We Are Voulhire series. The book follows the life of an immigrant, Galen Bray, from a war-torn land, who was the only surviving relative and heir to his distant uncle, upon whose invitation moves to Voulhire. Then, there is the king of Voulhire, who only wants his kingdom to proper, finds himself in a difficult situation when surrounded by his enemies. His biggest enemy is Maldorath, a powerful mage, who is presumed to be dead. Then there is Riva Rohavi, a group of rebels who kills whoever comes in support of the kingdom. They only want to see its destruction. Will they succeed? Is Maldorath actually dead? You will have to read the book to find out.
The book essentially introduces the readers to the world of Voulhire and the realm of magic, Caromentis. It explores various cities of Voulhire as well, such as Soulhire, which is the capital city, Hillport, a small town in the southern region, and Magnum Caelum to name a few. The book mainly focuses on Hillport where the two previous lords had done some cruel things, because of which the people were losing their faith in the King. So, he sends one of his closest friends and trusted judge, Eldus, to this small town as the new lord. But the things that he discovers are something completely unexpected.
Of all the things that I loved about this book, the most noteworthy is the description of Voulhire. I absolutely loved the way the author has created a picture of the land. Another thing is the map and links that are included at the beginning of the book which gives more insightful information about this world. The character of Maldorath vaguely reminded me of Voldemort and the book gave me a bit of a Harry Potter vibe, without that much intensity, which I liked very much.
There were a few instances where I felt it was being dragged, but all in all, I loved every detail and the realistic descriptions. I also loved the way it is written; I got to know the place and thoughts from different perspectives. It was as if I was seeing through the eyes of the author. I would love to pick up the next book in the series to find out what happens next.
The only thing that I disliked about the book is the lack of potent female characters. There were a few side characters, which seemed even if they weren’t there, it wouldn’t have made much difference; and the fact that this book cannot be read as a standalone. There are a lot of questions left unanswered. Hopefully, they will be resolved in the next one in the series. But I wouldn’t consider reducing my rating for these minute factors.
Keeping in mind all of the aforementioned points, I rate We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz 4 out of 4 stars. It is an exceptionally well-written book. I did not find any grammar or spelling mistakes which proves that it was professionally edited. Although this book seems like it was written with YA in mind, I would recommend it to a 17+ audience. There are instances where foul language is used, and there are some sexual references as well. Those who love a good fantasy novel would love this one.
