We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko is the next installment of Matthew Tysz’s series. Another stellar entry that kept me curious and left me eager for the next part. The story continues from the last book. Lord Meldorath sits in the ruins of Hillport and contemplates his next move. A mysterious virus arrives in the holy city, Yamon Soul, which worries the Eiodi. Galen, accompanied by his friends Demetrius and Rowan, travels to Virko to make a deal for raw materials to start up his blacksmithing business. Virko hides a dark secret in its underbelly. The young Lord Folcro, son of Virko’s leader, consorts with dangerous powers to make his own mark on the town.

Once more, Matthew Tysz has written an enticing story that widens the world he’s created without sacrificing character moments. The story takes on a darker atmosphere as the cities in Voulhire are slowly invaded by malicious forces. I do appreciate how events from the previous book had an impact on the world. It helps make the world feel organic and lived in. Events in Voulhire have a ripple effect that can be felt throughout its towns and cities. Galen was hoping for iron ore to be organized through Hillport, the town from the previous book. The same town which now lies in ruins and this leads Galen to find an alternative source for materials.

The remains of Hillport now serves as the current residence for Meldorath, the most dangerous mage alive. Meldorath has only a few scenes dedicated to him, but they make him an intriguing antagonist. His methods are clearly abhorrent but his musings on what to do next reveal a mind with a sinister plan. I’m interested to see what more is revealed of him in the next book.

The book ends with another cliffhanger and a desire for me to read more. I enjoy this series immensely. It’s a refreshing dark fantasy tale that doesn’t rely on shock value or unnecessary cynicism to keep you invested. I don’t have any complaints regarding the story as it accomplished the central purpose fiction has. It kept me entertained, eager for more and I enjoyed my time.

I would rate this book four out of four stars. The book was professionally edited. I could not find any errors. Fans of the last book will enjoy this next entry in the series, and I presume eager for the next one as well. I wouldn't recommend this book to people who prefer a story to be resolved in one book. This is a lengthy tale spread out over many. Those looking for long running stories will be in for a treat.
